Question of the Week for 6/23/2008
What are some methods, tips, and strategies that you used to teach your children manners? What worked? What did not work? What would you have done differently?
In a society that can overlook the importance of manners and respect, I think that children and adults who do use manners are a gem and stand out from the crowd. As soon as my children started to talk, we (my husband and I) started using "please", "thank you", and other forms of manners when talking with them during our daily conversations. A method that worked for us is "practicing what we preached." The more we as parents used manners the more the children did. Everyone knows that children mocked adults and older siblings so this technique worked quite well for our family. Now, if one of us forgets a "please" or "thank you", they are very quick to remind us!
