Hendersonville joins hands with 'Whoville'

“Every One Down in Henderson-villeLiked Christmas a lot…

But a whole weekend of fun, That brought them all together,They had NOT!

No one hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season! So why they didn’t have something like this. No one quite knew the reason.”

Hoping to use Whoville as its model for Christmas cheer, the city of Hendersonville has officially become sister cities with the fictional town immortalized in the Dr. Seuss classic, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

According to Lynda Evjen, organizer of next weekend’s Holidayfest activities, the idea to link the two cities by name came up when discussing the city’s 25th annual Christmas parade sponsored by Keller-Williams.

Evjen, a public relations professional who recently moved to the area, called Random House, publisher of the Dr. Seuss classics. From there, she was referred to Dr. Seuss Enterprises in New York and its director, Herb Cheyette.

“We then put together a non-commercial license agreement,” Evjen noted. As part of the agreement, the mayor of Hendersonville officially proclaims the city the sister city of Whoville and is allowed to use the Cindy Lou Who name in a contest sponsored by the city.

Hendersonville Mayor Scott Foster issued his proclamation at a city meeting on Oct. 23 effective through January, 2008.

“The city of Hendersonville and the city of Whoville have interests in furthering the holiday spirit between our cities,” reads the proclamation. It also cites a slew of activities – a gingerbread competition, tree lighting, boat parade, St. Nicholas Ball and traditional parade – as evidence to support Hendersonville’s festive reputation.

While many events like the parade, the city’s tree lighting ceremony and the Jr. Chamber’s lighted boat parade have been around a while, this is the first year all of the events – plus some new ones - have been held on the same weekend, Dec. 1 and 2. Evjen said they are all part of what she hopes will be an annual event known as “Whofest.”

“To the best of my knowledge, Hendersonville is the first and only city requesting to be declared a sister of Whoville,” said Cheyette. “We granted permission to Hendersonville because we believe that Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss), were he alive, would have granted such permission.”

To promote the event outside the city, Evjen sent the proclamation and a press release to a public relations newswire. News of the sister city arrangement appeared on Web sites across the globe.

Foster said he was pleased with all the attention Hendersonville has gotten since becoming sister cities with Whoville, adding the city has gotten media exposure from as far away as London, England.

“Whether you are young or old, you probably remember reading or watching, ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ with your family at Christmas time. I'm happy to be a part of a new Christmas tradition for our city that has already put Hendersonville back in the national spotlight," he said.

The festivities will begin with a gingerbread competition on Friday, Dec. 1 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church followed by the city tree lighting at City Hall at 5:30.

Here, the winners of the citywide Cindy Lou Who essay contest will be announced.

Saturday marks the lighted boat parade at dusk on Drake’s Creek and a St. Nicholas Ball at Our Lady of the Lake. On Sunday, the Christmas parade begins at 2:30 p.m. at Drake’s Creek Park North and winds its way down Gallatin Road.

“This is a wonderful way to kick off the season,” said Evjen. “Nobody can say they didn’t have anything to do that weekend.”
